• 1 pound pasta
  • 1 jar pasta sauce or crushed tomatoes (medium jar)
  • 2 -3 T. garlic powder or 3-4 fresh cloves, chopped, (make it strong)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3/4 pound salt pork, cut into small squares
  • 2 onions, chopped (medium)
Cook pasta according to package directions, drain and set aside. Fry salt pork until crisp, remove from fat and set aside. Reserve fat. Fry onions in a little of the salt pork fat, set aside. Heat sauce and add sugar until it is sweet. Add onions, garlic and salt pork pieces. Add salt pork fat to sauce a little at a time until you can taste it's flavor. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover sauce and continue heating for 35 minutes. Add sauce to pasta, mix well. The pasta will not have a lot of sauce but it will taste great! Serve with bread and reserve some sauce for dipping. This was a war recipe meant to feed a large family at a very low cost. If you do not have pasta, use bread and rolls for dipping. Make several batches and freeze.
