A person who consumes higher levels of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains and lower levels of meat products. Similar to a Vegetarian who maintains a diet consisting primarily of plant-based foods, the Flexitarian attempts to keep the majority of their consumption focused on foods with low levels of saturated fats and higher levels of fiber. However, the key difference between the Flexitarian and the Vegetarian is their consumption of meat products. Although some vegetarians will allow fish and/or poultry in their diets but will not consume meat from other animals, Flexitarians consume a variety of meat products 2 to 3 times a week with a greater emphasis on maintaining a diet that is higher in fruits, vegetables and grains than it is in meat products.
